Essential reading for any strategy session

Sometimes the sheer volume of business books can be overwhelming. Every niche, every process, every function has a book written about it. If you’re planning to re-launch your strategy, it’s essential to be well prepared. But where to start?

Let me help. Throughout my career as Managing Director of three fast growing tech companies and, more recently, as a Business Growth Coach, I’ve read them all. Some great. Some not quite so great. Here are my top recommendations for strategy:

Making Business More Human with Hilary Corna

Do you know what your company’s nine touch points are? The things that are the most important to your clients? Could you say, off the top of your head, what is most important to your customers pre-sale, during the sales process and after sale?

Do you even have touch points that are so remarkable that people continue to talk about you long after the engagement?

Meet Hilary Corna, author, speaker and CEO of coaching consulting business, Corna Partners. Hilary is on a mission to humanise business. She works predominantly with SMB to help them design uniquely human custom experiences to enable them to grow.

“I’m humanising their customer experience, from end to end point, really focused on this new world that we live in. It’s an intersection of work, humanity and culture. And as the world is becoming more human, more aware, more conscious, more open minded, we’re allowed to show more of our sides of our identity.”

Hilary says that every business has nine touch points that are important to the customer, not to the company, to the customer. It’s your job as the leader of the company, to identify those nine touch points and make them wow your customers.

This is a really insightful conversation with a truly effervescent person. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Storytelling Can Make or Break Your Leadership

“It’s a new goal-setting framework.” That was one of my large enterprise clients’ attempt at an inspirational rallying cry for their rollout of Objectives and Key Results, or OKRs. As you might expect, it wasn’t met with much enthusiasm: “Why do we need a new goal-setting system?” managers and employees protested. “What will this mean for my evaluation? Am I still on track for that promotion?”

Our Work-from-Anywhere Future

Before 2020 a movement was brewing within knowledge-work organizations. Personal technology and digital connectivity had advanced so far and so fast that people had begun to ask, “Do we really need to be together, in an office, to do our work?” We got our answer during the pandemic lockdowns. We learned that a great many of us don’t in fact need to be colocated with colleagues on-site to do our jobs.

Cultivate 5 Drivers for a High-Performance Culture.

A company’s organizational culture is like the ground everyone and everything in the company stands on — it is that from which sustainable business grows. The trouble is, well-intentioned leaders don’t prioritize their culture during disruption; instead, they focus on safeguarding assets and maximizing efficiencies.

The Leader’s Greatest Return by John C Maxwell

As close as you can get to sitting one-on-one with world-renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell, here he shares the most important lessons he’s learned about the leadership development process over the last quarter century. What is the greatest return on a leader’s time? After leaders have invested in their own leadership growth, what is the best way to accomplish their vision and grow their organizations? Develop leaders! The more leaders an organization has and the better equipped they are to lead, the more successful the organization and all of its leaders.

Ditch hybrid meetings

If some of your staff are in the office and others remote, try to ditch any hybrid meetings where some are dialling in and others are in the same space. It just doesn’t work. My feeling is that even if only one person is remote, everyone should be. Then you have parity of treatment. So if you have people in the office, spread them out and get them to dial in too. Unless you don’t care about the people at home and are trying to persuade them to come back to the office that is!
