How to Build Systems So Good Your Business Runs Without You
How long can your business run without you? In hours please.
A client told me about his modus operandi on Monday.
40 adults in a car park at 8:40 because one bloke had the keys and was, by his own account, “nearly there”.
Nobody was cross. You can’t be cross with the only man who can let you in.
He arrived at 9, parked arseways, and took his time.
He’s the only man in that building with the keys. He likes it.
My client found this hilarious. He told me from a car, between 2 meetings only he could take, signing off a holiday request.
And he’s right. Nobody else could take the meetings. He likes that too.
Your best people stopped bringing you decisions months ago. They wait instead. Then they resign.
And a business that only runs when you’re in it has a name.
Your advisers see it as risk. It comes off the price. They’ll be very clear about that.
That was me at Rackspace and at the time I called it commitment. I was the bottleneck.
Tell me. What stops on Monday if you don’t show up? Write that list.
Then ask why none of it has anyone else’s name on it.
